Phone showing a map pin on a Lagos street with a dispatch rider, headline Your House Has a Digital Postcode

Ever had a dispatch rider call you five times because he cannot find your house? Turn left after the yellow gate, then ask for Mama Tunde's shop. Nigeria is trying to end that.

On October 1, 2026, the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) launched the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System. Every addressable building now gets its own 11-character code, replacing the old six-digit codes that covered whole areas.

What the code looks like

NIPOST's example is FC 02 A09 DB 09. The letters and numbers narrow down from the state all the way to your specific building. Your neighbour's building will have a different code from yours.

How to find your postcode

Go to postcode.gov.ng, or download the Postcode by NIPOST app on Android. The iOS app is listed as coming soon.

Select Find my postcode.

Allow location access if you are at home, or search by address, place name or a Google Maps link.

Tap your building on the map. Zoom in and double-check you have selected the right one, not the house next door.

Save the code and start sharing it. It is free to find, save and share.

If your postcode is wrong or missing

If your building is not on the map, request a postcode through the website or app. You will provide your address details plus your location or a Google Maps link. If the details shown for your building are wrong, submit a correction the same way. NIPOST reviews every request before updating its records, so it will not change instantly.

NIPOST is aiming for full coverage of all 36 states and the FCT by December 2026, so if your area looks thin now, check again in a few weeks.

Why is my name showing?

Some people have been surprised to see a homeowner's name attached to their building. NIPOST says field officers collected informal descriptions people use to identify properties, such as Chief Adeyemi's house. The postcode identifies the building, not the people living in it. If you are uncomfortable with what is displayed, request a correction.

Beware of copycat sites

Several unofficial postcode websites exist. Only postcode.gov.ng gives you the official building-level code. Never pay anyone to get your postcode.

Why this matters

Failed deliveries cost Nigerian businesses real money. A precise address helps online sellers, banks, emergency services and anyone sending you a package. If you run an online business, add a postcode field to your checkout now. Your riders will thank you.
