Spotify has added audiobooks to its app in Nigeria. Since October 14, listeners on both the free and paid tiers can browse a catalogue of more than 350,000 titles, and Nigerian authors can now put their audiobooks in front of listeners around the world through the same app.

The catch? Audiobooks are not simply thrown in with what you already pay. Listening time is sold by the hour. Here is how it works, what it really costs and whether it makes sense for you.

What happened

Spotify switched on audiobooks in Nigeria on October 14, 2026. It is part of a phased rollout that aims to take the feature from 22 countries to more than 180 markets by the end of 2026. Kenya, South Africa and Ghana are also part of the African expansion.

Audiobooks get their own section in the app, next to music and podcasts. Update your app, then open the Audiobooks section or search for a title directly.

The key numbers

₦2,300 a month: the price of Audiobooks+, an add-on for both Free and Premium users. It gives you 15 hours of listening each month.

₦2,700: the cost of a 10-hour top-up once your monthly hours run out.

No rollover: unused hours reset each billing cycle. Only time you spend actively listening counts.

350,000+ titles available in Nigeria at launch.

39% and 32%: the year-on-year growth in audiobook listeners and listening hours in Spotify's existing markets, according to Owen Smith, Spotify's VP of Audiobooks.

You can also buy individual books to keep. Spotify has not published a standard price per title.

What it really costs per hour

Quick maths: ₦2,300 for 15 hours works out to about ₦153 per hour. The top-up is ₦2,700 for 10 hours, which is ₦270 per hour, nearly double. So the monthly allowance is the better deal, and heavy listeners will feel the top-ups quickly.

To put it in context, a book that runs around 10 hours would use two-thirds of one month's allowance.

Why it matters to Nigerians

For listeners: many Nigerians already lose hours to traffic every week. Audiobooks turn that dead time into reading time, inside an app a lot of people already use for music and podcasts.

For authors: through Spotify for Authors, Nigerian publishers and self-published writers can upload, manage and earn from audiobooks that reach listeners in more than 180 markets. The deals are non-exclusive, so authors can still sell on other platforms.

The unknowns: Spotify has not said how many Nigerian-authored titles are on the platform or how revenue is shared with local authors and publishers. Smith said Spotify expects catalogue development in African markets to take time. Reports also differ on whether Premium in Nigeria includes any free audiobook hours, as it does in some other markets, so check your own app before paying for the add-on.

What to do

Browse before you pay. Open the Audiobooks tab and confirm the books you actually want are there.

Check your plan. Look in the app to see whether your Premium subscription includes any listening hours before buying Audiobooks+.

Match the plan to your habit. If you listen less than 15 hours a month, the ₦2,300 add-on should cover you. If you only want one specific book, compare that with buying the title outright.

Save your data. Download audiobooks on Wi-Fi so you can listen offline on the road.

Authors: sign up on Spotify for Authors and read the payment terms carefully before uploading.

What to watch next

The big questions are how fast the local catalogue grows, whether Nigerian-language titles show up and whether Spotify publishes clear revenue-share terms for local writers. Watch the pricing too, since the ₦2,300 add-on and ₦2,700 top-up are the first Nigerian prices Spotify has set for audiobooks.
