Bad Network? MTN May Owe You Airtime. Here Is How to Know

MTN is crediting some customers with airtime for poor network service earlier this year. Some got N20. Some got over N1,400. Here is who qualifies and why.

If you got a text from MTN recently saying your line was credited with airtime for quality of service issues, you are not imagining it. MTN is paying compensation for poor network service, and so is Airtel.

But not everyone who suffered dropped calls will get paid, and the amounts vary a lot. Here is how it works.

What is happening

Following directives from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), operators must compensate subscribers in areas where service fell below required standards. The current payout covers network problems recorded between February and April 2026. It is MTN's second round. The first, in May, covered November 2025 to January 2026.

Who qualifies

You qualify if both of these are true:

You were in a Local Government Area the NCC listed as having poor network quality during the affected period.

You made at least one billed outgoing activity in that period, such as a call, SMS or data session.

Simply having a bad experience is not enough. Your area has to be on the NCC's list.

How to know if you got paid

You do not need to apply. Eligible lines are credited automatically and you get an SMS. Check your messages for a note about quality of service compensation, then check your airtime balance. The credit can be used for calls, SMS and data.

Why did I only get N20?

Customers have reported credits ranging from N20 to N1,436. MTN says the amount is calculated per line, so two people with similar complaints can receive very different credits. Many users have questioned how the figures are worked out, and so far the formula has not been clearly published.

This is not a refund for missing data

MTN has been clear that this payment is only for poor network quality. It does not cover complaints about data that seems to disappear too fast. MTN received more than 12,000 data depletion complaints in the first half of 2026, and those are a separate issue. If that is your problem, you still need to file a complaint with MTN and, if unresolved, escalate it to the NCC.

Why this matters

N20 will not change your life. But for the first time, Nigerian networks are paying a price when service drops below standard. As data use keeps climbing, this kind of pressure is one of the few levers that pushes operators to invest in better networks.
