At 9pm on September 30, Shalom Rayhamen started building a game. By 7am the next morning, it was live.

Nine days later, that overnight project had more than 4.7 million players and a company behind it valued at $10 million.

What is Lagos Life?

Lagos Life is a free browser game, a bit like The Sims set in Lagos. You create a character, get a job, earn virtual naira, pay rent and hang out with other players in a shared city. It is packed with things every Lagosian knows: danfo buses, generators and real locations.

Rayhamen says she was inspired by The Sims 3 and Lagos Run, another viral Nigerian browser game where you drive a danfo through the city. She built Lagos Life with the help of AI tools.

The numbers

Launched October 1. Passed 3 million players by October 7 and 5 million by October 9.

Peaked at more than 110,000 players online at the same time.

Raised a $500,000 angel round at a $10 million valuation, led by Mono's AB Hassan, Nathan Nwachuku and Flutterwave CEO GB Agboola.

Over $170,000 in earned and contracted revenue since launch, a figure that mixes cash received with signed deals.

How a free game makes money

Brands pay for space inside the game. Billboards at the in-game airports reportedly cost โ‚ฆ500,000 a week, up from โ‚ฆ5,000 at launch. Vatar, the company Rayhamen formed on October 6, also earns from music promotion, corporate partnerships and football streaming. It is a simple idea: if millions of young Nigerians are hanging out in your virtual Lagos, advertisers want to be there too.

The catch

Viral is not the same as lasting. Rayhamen has said running the game's servers is expensive, and browser games often see interest fade once the novelty wears off. The real test is whether players are still logging in three months from now.

Why this matters

Lagos Life is proof of two big shifts. First, AI tools now let one person build in a night what used to take a team months. Second, culturally specific content wins: players did not want another generic game, they wanted their own city. Expect a wave of copycats, and Vatar is already expanding, adding Port Harcourt and talking about building many more worlds.
